What to expect

Your first visit

From the moment you walk through the doors of a Todd Clinic you will be greeted with a friendly smile and warm welcome from our wonderful reception team. If this is your very first visit to a chiropractor our experienced team take the time to get to know you, make sure you are comfortable and provide you with all the information you need to have a beneficial time with us at the clinic. There will be some paperwork to complete to ensure we've got all your details, and then you'll meet your chiropractor.

Your chiropractor will talk with you about why you have chosen to seek chiropractic care and will determine if chiropractic is the right choice for you. If it is, then your consultation will start with a case history and general health history. Next your chiropractor will perform an examination including postural analysis, orthopaedic testing, neurological testing, and joint and muscle palpation. Your chiropractor may also refer you for x-rays to provide more detailed information about a specific condition. Combining all this information gives us a clearer picture to be able to deliver the best possible recommendations for your health.

With all the information now available your chiropractor will discuss with you your proposed care plan, and depending on your situation, your chiropractor may begin your care right away.

Your second visit

On your second visit your chiropractor will go through the results of your examination with you (including x-rays if they were required) and will confirm the recommended care plan to get you on the road to better health!

The chiropractor will then action the care plan and the lovely reception team will book in your future appointments.

Chiropractic Care for Children

Just as adults have their spine checked for poor movement and symmetry, children may be checked for this as well.

Chiropractic care also includes advice on; exercise, nutrition and lifestyle.

Chiropractic care at Todd Clinics for children is Practiced according to world wide consensus guidelines, and is tailored to suit their age, weight and unique anatomy. Any spinal treatment is modified for safety and comfort, and no cracking techniques are used on infants.

Before any care commences, your child’s health history, spinal function and an examination will be performed. Your Chiropractor will discuss all findings and the treatment plan recommendations, including any risks involved with the care, and you'll be asked to sign for informed consent before any care is given. Children under 18 years are not typically x-rayed unless there is a substantial reason to do so, such as significant trauma or postural deformity.

Referral to other medical practitioners or paediatricians will be given if necessary and the Todd Clinic team will actively communicate with all health practitioners involved in your child's care.

Is chiropractic painful?

Our Practitioners undertake a five-year university degree and many have additional training in a variety of techniques that can be modified for the safety and comfort of their patients.

Is chiropractic safe for children?

All Todd Clinics chiropractors have been trained at a university level to treat children from newborns to early adulthood. Techniques are modified for the safety and comfort of your child in relation to evidence-based practice.

Published Research carried out by Monash University PhD candidate and chiropractor Dr. Angela Todd, has shown that chiropractic, physiotherapy, manual medicine and osteopathy all carry a very rare but material risk (1). To minimise risks, our chiropractors perform a thorough history and examination of a child before beginning any care. All Chiropractors are trained to modify their approaches to suit the special needs of infants and young children. Our chiropractors work with your regular GP and will refer to them were necessary.

Many of the techniques used on children by the chiropractors at Todd Clinics involve massage, gentle stretching, cranial therapy and the use of a special instrument to apply very low and specific impulses to restore normal spinal motion. Several of our chiropractors have a special interest and post graduate training in chiropractic neuro-developmental paediatrics which focuses on incorporating specific chiropractic care with brain based activities, exercises and nutrition.

What other services do you offer?

We are all about collaborating with other natural health professionals to give our patients the best care.

We offer; chiropractic, massage, psychology, podiatry, natural therapies and nutrition, acupuncture and chinese medicine and exercise physiology to achieve this.

What techniques do you use?

Drop-piece tables

The special tables utilised in our practice feature state of the art mechanical motion sections which move up and down under your body. By utilising a moving section under a particular part of the spine, the chiropractor can use only minimal pressure to restore normal glide to tight and unbalanced spinal joints. They can be used from school aged children up to the elderly.

There is a special section to these tables that moves forward allowing a pregnant woman to lie on her stomach comfortably face down.

SOT – Sacro-Occipital Technique

The use of wedge shaped blocks, and crania-sacral therapy

The Activator is a small hand held instrument which is used to gently restore the function of the spine and nervous system. It can feel somewhat like a quick finger flick against the skin.

The instrument can be used on all ages of people but is especially useful in the treatment of children and the elderly.

Chiropractic Neurology

The purpose of chiropractic neurology is to identify areas of dysfunction within the nervous system and to rehabilitate these areas using specific techniques and exercises, without the use of drugs or surgery. A chiropractic neurology assessment involves a comprehensive neurological and orthopaedic examination. Special techniques that are often used during rehabilitation include:

  • Visual and auditory based exercises
  • Electro-therapeutics and other adjunct therapies
  • Activities involving spatial awareness and changes in perceptual activity
  • Spinal and limb adjustments
  • Spinal and limb exercises
  • Specific cognitive activities
  • Behavioural modifications

 Manual therapies (Gonstead and Diversified)

A range of manually applied chiropractic therapies modified to suit the age, condition and preferences of the patient, with a focus on restoring neuro-musculoskeletal function.

Chiropractic Neuro-developmental Paediatrics

At Todd Clinics several chiropractors have post-graduate training and qualifications in neuro-developmental paediatrics.

This is a specific type of paediatric chiropractic care where thorough examination of brain based developmental issues are investigated, and specific neurological based therapies, including; exercise, nutrition and home based activities are applied.

Assessment and review with maternal health, GP’s, paediatricians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists is an important part of the co-ordinated approach the evidence informed Todd Clinic's Chiropractors will take when managing your child.

Some common signs of neuro-developmental delay where you Chiropractor will work in collaboration with your Maternal health nurse, GP, Paediatrician and other Allied health practitioners may include:

  • Poor tone (floppy child who doesn’t lift up their head easily, delayed rolling, sitting and crawling can be affected by low tone)
  • Speech and language problems, Problems in understanding speech and translating that into language may be from brain-based issues. Your child will be assessed and a programme of care designed, which may include referral for hearing tests, or work with a speech therapist.
  • Clumsiness or poor co-ordination, this includes delayed walking, unusual patterns in walking that are not within the normal age range for the average child.
  • Learning problems: poor function of particular areas of the brain can affect how well a child learns. Assessment of the area’s that are not functioning normally and brain based activities to stimulate improved function in these areas, is the goal of this type of chiropractic neuro-developmental paediatric care.
  • Sensory processing problems-For instance, sensitivities to the feel of clothing, dislike of touch, loud noises, sensitive to bright light and textures or tastes of food. Issues with processing information in this way, may make it difficult to focus attention in the class room. These difficulties in focusing attention and being distracted easily may be brain based and may be helped by nutrition, brain based chiropractic neuro-developmental paediatric care, and specific exercises.
  • Socialisation issues related to the brain receiving too much or too little information. The child with poor function in the front of the brain, may typically regulate their moods and feelings with reactive behavior, hitting or biting. Others may choose to go inwardly and not want to connect. Specific testing and treatment can be performed to check and improve the function of the frontal lobe, to see if that is part of the reason a child may be “misbehaving”.
